FAQ

Controller – General

Do I need the toroidal interference filter for my 2.4 Ghz transmitter?

Even with 2.4 GHz systems, it is necessary to leave the toroidal interference filter in the supply line to ensure safe and interference-free operation.

Is the sparking when plugging in harmful to the controller?

The resulting flash when plugged into the drive battery is normally not harmful to the controller. An anti-flash resistor of 1-5 ohms and 0.5-1 watt, built into the supply line can prevent the resulting flash.

For the JIVE controllers KONTRONIK offers a tuned anti-flash kit (order number: 9056), the use of which is highly recommended at 10S and above and when using modern battery technology.

An integrated anti-flash plug-in system with 5.5mm plugs and integrated electronics is also offered (order number 9055).

Which speed controller is right for me?

KONTRONIK offers its customers general drive recommendations for almost all applications. These can be downloaded from the download area or have a drive recommended for your specific application.

Which backup battery should I connect?

We recommend a four-cell NiCd or NiMh battery as a backup battery. For the speed controllers of the KOBY/JIVE Pro and KOSMIK series, a two-cell LiPo can also be connected as a backup battery. However, the permissible voltage of the connected servos must be observed. The backup battery is connected to a free receiver slot. The connection of diodes is not necessary.

How can I update my speed controller?

Controllers of the KOBY, JIVE Pro and KOSMIK series can be updated online via ProgUNIT.

Please return controllers of older series to KONTRONIK with a completed service form.

Can I connect a receiver battery in parallel with the speed controller?

Yes. A four-cell (NiMh) receiver battery is allowed and recommended for all KONTRONIK speed controllers.

KOSMIK and JIVE Pro

How do I read out the KOSMIK or JIVE Pro data?

To read the logged data we recommend the program Data Explorer, which can be used free of charge.

The speed controllers of the KOSMIK series can be updated online. You need the ProgUNIT for this.

We generally recommend inserting the fuse into the negative lead of the battery cable.

Do I have to use the fuse on my KOSMIK?

Which backup battery may I connect to the KOSMIK or JIVE Pro?

We recommend a 4-5 cells NiMH or with HV servos max. 2 S LiPo

Why does my KOSMIK or JIVE Pro not output the set BEC voltage?

The KOSMIK will not enable full BEC voltage until it receives a valid receiver signal.

Can the ELKOs on my JIVE Pro be swapped?

Due to the overmolding of the controller, the ELKOs cannot be easily replaced on the JIVE Pro. KONTRONIK strongly advises against operating a JIVE Pro with defective ELKOs. Operating the JIVE Pro with defective ELKOs can lead to functional failures as well as to the destruction of the speed controller. If ELKOs are damaged or even destroyed, it is recommended to use the KONTRONIK repair service.

For the sole electrolytic capacitor exchange there is a repair flat rate, which you can request by mail .

JIVE

When is the second BEC cable needed?

For BEC currents above 2A, a second BEC cable must be used. The second BEC cable is connected to the slave connector of the JIVE.

What do I do with the jumper after programming?

After programming, put the jumper back on the connector from which it was removed. So it can not be lost. The jumper can remain on the contacts during operation.

What does the KSA mode do?

In KONTRONIK Special Application mode the dynamic timing adjustment is configured to other parameters. Increased engine compatibility is achieved for engines that do not run safely without KSA. The KSA mode is not necessary for KONTRONIK motors.

Which backup battery may I connect?

4 cells NimH

BEC voltage to be set: 5-6VJ

ATTENTION: please check in advance the respective specifications of the battery as well as servos and receiver for compatibility with the respective voltage.

Can the ELKOs on my JIVE be swapped?

Due to the overmolding of the controller, the ELKOs cannot be easily replaced on the JIVE. KONTRONIK strongly advises against operating a JIVE with defective ELCOs. Operating the JIVE with defective ELKOs can lead to functional failures as well as to the destruction of the speed controller. If ELKOs are damaged or even destroyed, it is recommended to use the KONTRONIK repair service.

For the sole electrolytic capacitor exchange there is a repair flat rate, which you can gladly request by mail

KOBY

Which default values are stored in my KOBY?

The default values can be found here KOBY_Default values

Which backup battery may I connect?

We recommend a 4 -5 cells NiMH or with HV servos max.2 S Lipo

Why does my KOBY not output the set BEC voltage?

The KOBY will not enable full BEC voltage until it receives a valid receiver signal.

Can my KOBY be updated online?

The speed controllers of the KOBY series are online update capable. You need the ProgUNIT for this.

JAZZ

What is the jumper needed for?

The jumper is only needed for programming a mode. If the jumper is removed during initialization of the controller, the controller switches to programming mode. After successful programming, the jumper can be plugged back into the designated slot. The jumper can remain on the designated slot during operation.

Which backup battery may I connect?

4 cells NimH

BEC voltage to be set: 5-6V

ATTENTION: please check in advance the respective specifications of the battery as well as servos and receiver for compatibility with the respective voltage.

SUN Plus

Is my SUN Plus speed controller LiPo capable?

The SUN Plus series speed controllers have a LiPo mode and are LiPo capable.

The older SUN speed controllers do not have a correct battery management for LiPo cells, i.e. the low voltage cut-off to protect the battery does not work. The controllers themselves work with LiPo cells.

Where is the button?

The index finger of the hand shown on the silver shield of the controller points to the button.

Motors – General

How to change the ball bearings of my motor?

Ball bearings in KONTRONIK motors are replaced by KONTRONIK Service. For this purpose, the motor must be sent directly to KONTRONIK without any third-party attachments and with a completed service form .

May I shorten the motor connection cables on the motor?

Since the motor connection cables are the outgoing winding and are made of non-solderable enameled copper wire, they must not be shortened under any circumstances. Shortened or damaged windings/motor connection cables cannot be repaired, but must be replaced completely.

Do I need to oil the ball bearings?

No, this would wash the grease out of the bearings. This shortens the service life of the ball bearings.
